What is gear in our vehicles🤔 ?

You might have observed that a person driving a car will frequently shift gear and as soon as he shifts the gear, there will be a change in vehicle speed. And even if a car has to move in reverse direction gears are used.So now let us learn how shifting gears will help us to accomplish these tasks. Let us consider a vehicle having 5 gears. This information gives a basic idea on the function of each gear.

Transmission of  Engine power to required location is done by gear box. Gear box is the second stage transmission system which is used to change speed, torque and transmits the required power from engine to the wheel that is driven.

If a vehicle has to run properly, the gear transmission plays a key role.It acts like a regulator which regulates the required power at correct time. Now let us have a look at a simple gear box.

Neutral gear:
This is a gear which separates the engine from gear box. we can control the wheel by steering but no power will be sent to wheels during this gear.

First Gear: This is the most basic gear which is used to move the vehicle from stationary position. Basically it is the gear used to move the vehicle from rest to motion. The vehicle moves in slow speed during this gear.Maximum speed can be upto 20kmph

Second Gear: After the vehicle has started moving using the first gear, for further increment in speed of vehicle is shifted to second gear. If we want to start a car in a non uniform road, second gear can be used.Maximum speed can be upto 40kmph

Third Gear : To further increase the speed of the vehicle than the maximum speed attained through the Second gear, third gear is used. You may think why can't we start the car using 3rd gear. It is not possible because, it does not have enough power to run the vehicle initially. After the vehicle reaches the maximum speed using 2nd gear, the third gear is used to enhance the speed further..Maximum speed can be upto 50kmph

Fourth and Fifth Gear : This is further improvement in speed of vehicle any speed above 50kmph can be handled using 4th gear. after reaching 4th gear at a speed of 60kmph and above 5th gear can be used. Best driving experience is during top gear.

Reverse gear: As the name indicates, it facilitates the vehicle to move in reverse direction. speed upto 5kmph can be achieved.

In recent automotive development Auto-shift Transmission has changed and simplified the driving process.
just a simple operation will do the job.

Hopefully this information has given a very basic knowledge about how gear are used in vehicles.

Steering System In Automobile Engineering

Steering system-A basic understanding It is not possible to run the vehicle always along straight road as road is made as per the topography. Therefore, it is necessary for driver to turn the vehicle now and then as per the road turning. It is purpose of steering wheel and steering column which transmits the rotational motion of steering to steering gears. This steering gear increases the rotational force in order to transmit greater torque to steering linkage which transmits the steering gear movement to front wheel through front axle. The steering system configuration used depends upon the type of vehicle as car or truck. There are mainly 2 types of steering Rack and Pinion type and recirculating ball type   The Function of Steering System:  Is to convert rotary movement of steering wheel into angular turn of front wheel. It helps in swinging the wheels to left and right as per requirements. Absorb large part of the road shocks and prevent them being transmitted to the ...

Types Of vehicle Drive Mechanisms

Drive Mechanisms: A brief explanation Before knowing about the drive mechanism, let us understand what do we mean by a DRIVE.... DRIVE  is the arrangement (or position) of engine and transmission system in various ways. There are four types of Drives:                                       1.Front Engine Rear wheel Drive.                    2 Front Engine Front Wheel Drive.                    3.Rear Engine and Rear wheel Drive                    4.Four Wheel Drive. 1. Front Engine Rear Wheel Drive:                              This is the most common type of arrangement in 4 wheeled Automobile. Here, engine is positioned in front portion and drive is in back ...

INTRODUCTION TO AUTOMOBILE ENGINEERING

HISTORY OF AUTOMOBILE           The First Automobile with Otto Cycle (Petrol cycle) was built by Karl Benz from Germany in 1885 and was granted patent  in 1886.. "Development of this great Invension".... Very soon invension of accelerator for speed control and ignition system, clutch, gear shifting mechanism and most importantly radiator cooling system for engine. Later on devoloping the automobile in the year 1888. In 1893  introduction of the first Four Wheeled Automobile which was having a Four stroke engine. Large scale production of automobiles started in 1902. As years went on.. massive scale of automobile production started and revolutionized the industry... Making its importance around the globe. After several modifications and improvements in design of the automobile , the efficiency safety and performance has become the most noticed criteria for automobile enthusiasts.. The Automobile i...
